COLD TURKEY is the 2nd single of MAD MADMEN, which focuses on the narrative context of Guitarist/Vocalist KALAM MAHARDHIKA’s struggle with mental health issues and his ongoing attempt at self-recovery
The song was composed by guitarist KALAM MAHARDHIKA originally as an instrumental piece. He then came up with the idea of incorporating a swing section to the song upon rehearsal with drummer THAREQ SATRIA and bassist MARVIN MUHAMMAD, adding an impromptu spoken word verse to said section of the song.
The lyrics incorporate KALAM’s attitude towards his surrounding’s feel for the need of him to stay on mood stabilizers and the inevitable contradiction he felt regarding how it effected his actual condition, which would ultimately lead to him cutting of the meds and going ‘COLD TURKEY’.
The second verse of the song further explains KALAM’s condition after cutting off substance and how he attributes his recovery and recuperation to the fact that his meds weren’t providing the right type of reaction in regards to his mental health, and would further on lead to his gratitude for music, and cutting substances being the most determining factors for his mental stability
Musically, the transition of the music from a ‘straight’ 16th feel to a ‘swing’ feel, assesses a bipolarity that often attributes to the mood swings that accompanies KALAM’s condition quite often.
