BIO
MAD MADMEN are a music trio formed in March 2018 based in JAKARTA, INDONESIA. The band consists of KALAM MAHARDHIKA (Guitars/Vocals), MARVIN MUHAMMAD (Bass/Vocals) and THAREQ SATRIA LUBUK (Drums). Over the span of one and a half years, the band has released 2 singles, 1 EP, a music video, and 1 live recording session.
MAD MADMEN’s musical orientation relies on the dualism of compositional styles provided by KALAM MAHARDHIKA and MARVIN MUHAMMAD with KALAM’s songs consisting of more riff based, modal compositions emphasising on lyrical narratives heavily influenced by real life occurrences presented in a story telling format, and beats oriented more towards the idiomatic styles of Funk, Jazz, and Blues. MARVIN’s compositions on the other hand, rely heavily on fluid and ever-changing chord progressions with catchy melodic phrases and hooks, metric modulation, and syncopated sequences as the song’s main selling point.
MAD MADMEN are three individuals with a strong sense of idealistic value towards their musical output. The name in itself - although granted by a Wu-Tang name generator, would later on serve of great relevance to the band’s identity.
All three members - albeit having different musical preferences - share a common denominating sense of musicianship, and a similar outlook on becoming a musician; it is a lifelong path that is full of dynamic twists andd turns. MAD MADMEN’s music aims to provide a narratively diverse perspective on personal life issues, cultural happenings, and at times serve as a contemplative note for each personnel.
All this, paired with the trio’s concern for the balance of musical and lyrical elements become the foreground for MAD MADMEN’s musicality

KALAM MAHARDHIKA (Guitars/Vocals)
Born in Jakarta, Indonesia on December 14th 1994, Kalam Mahardhika first picked up the guitar at the age of 10. Reluctant and unwilling, Kalam only started enjoying to play after acquiring his first electric guitars, 2.5 years into his playing. Kalam’s early influences included bands such as Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera and Iron Maiden. Kalam’s transition from heavy metal came in the form of his exposure towards bands such as Primus, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Jimi Hendrix which led to his decision to study at MSI (Music School of Indonesia) undergoing the Blues Guitar program under the mentorship of Bagas Nara Satyawaki. During his last years of Junior High, Kalam was exposed to John Scofield’s “A Go Go” record which exposed him to Jazz, Funk, and R&B music, which at that time was foreign territory for him. He would then go on to take private lessons with Krakatau guitarist, Donny Suhendra (2011-2015) and enrolled into Institut Musik Daya Indonesia (2012-2014 and 2018) but did not manage to complete his studies
MARVIN MUHAMMAD (Bass/Vocals)
Born in Jakarta, Indonesia on December 17th 1995, Marvin Muhammad started out by playing drums at the age of 11, but it didn’t last for very long. A year after, inspired by Guitar Hero, Marvin decided to pursue the bass guitar instead, fascinated by the capabilities and restrictions of the instrument; and the supporting role that it demands within an ensemble.
Starting out from Classic Rock, Marvin quickly discovered all sorts of music; Metal, 60s pop such as The Beatles, Jazz Fusion such as Weather Report, Brazilian music and eventually Indie Rock and Pop, with these influences, Marvin started writing songs during his high school years.
Marvin pursued formal musical education at MSI Pondok Indah (Music School of Indonesia) from 2013 to 2015, under the guidance of Franky Sadikin, Lie Andi, among others. Shortly after he became a bass tutor there, whilst further continuing his studies at UPH’s Conservatory of Music in 2015.
THAREQ SATRIA LUBUK (Drums)
Born in Jakarta, 18 November 1995, Thareq was first intrigued by music when he heard Blink 182, when he was around the age of 14, then he decided to pick up the sticks and learned any song he could, teaching himself in the process. He then began exploring modern rock bands such as Foo Fighters, Incubus, and Classic Rock bands, such as Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, The Beatles, among others. During the first three years of his drumming history, he listened to more punk rock bands such as Rise Against, Bad Religion, and Social Distortion which contributed to his signature hard-hitting and slugger style.
Thareq decided to study deeper into music by enrolling at UPH’s Conservatory of Music in 2014.
